Illuminating a hidden world
It may not look like it at first glance, but soil is one of the most biodiverse habitats on Earth. In fact, many terrestrial systems have more biomass in their soil than they do above ground! Soil is a complex living system, maintained by a myriad of wonderful and often bizarre-looking creatures of different shapes and sizes. Soil ecologists like myself often need to look at these creatures under microscopes to identify them, but viewing them in life through the lens of a camera can provide additional unique insights into their fascinating lifecycles and behaviours. To explore my photos of soil organisms, just click on an image below to be taken to a gallery and some interesting information for that group of creatures. If these pages leave you wanting to learn even more about soil biodiversity, then on my resources page you’ll find lots of helpful links for developing your interest even further.
